Mock Con DVD

The Storied History of the Washington & Lee Mock Presidential Convention is now finally on DVD! DVD Widescreen Video Time= 39 min. Bonus Films of 14 Parade Highlights From the DVD jacket: Since a very modest beginning in 1908, the Washington and Lee Mock Convention has become one of the great W&L traditions. This signature event attempts to predict the Presidential and Vice Presidential nominees for the party out of power. It is the most authentic and accurate collegiate political convention in America, providing an engaging real-life educational experience for countless W&L students. As former U. S. Senator John Warner, W&L Class of 1949, says in this production, many of them have had fine careers in public service. The compelling history of Mock Con is captured here for the first time. See and hear about the transition from a purely social occasion to a realistic data-driven outcome, with appearances by former U. S. Presidents, sitting Congressional leaders, and Governors. Recall parade antics, stem-winding speeches from political legends, fiery debates, and even the tragic death of a national figure on the Mock Con stage. Special thanks to Tyson Janney '53, whose sharp vision and passion for this project made it happen. Tom Camden, Seth McCormick-Goodhart, Lisa McCown and Wilson Hallett '15 led the careful retrieval of historical records and film from University Special Collections. W&L salutes the Class of 1953, co-chairs Tyson Janney and Spot McClerkin for their 60th reunion gifts to fund the project, especially lead donors Gerry Lenfest, Temple Webber and Guy Steuart II. Roger Mudd, Class of 1950, donated his historical knowledge, keen journalistic eye and splendid narration. The talents of our executive producer, Bill Parks '82 at Dominion Post, and our lead writer, Joe Fab, made the story come to life. Key support was also provided by W&L president Kenneth P. Ruscio, Professors Bill Connelly and Bob de Maria, Vice President for University Advancement Dennis Cross, and his Special Assistant Jeff Hanna. All of us hope you enjoy this stroll down Mock Con Memory Lane.
